Categories of Membership & Fees 2024 / 2025

There are two types of membership with the College, Affiliated membership and Full membership, each of which are broken down into different membership categories depending on your qualifications, experience and location.

Affiliated Membership

Pre-Exam Trainee Membership
This category is applicable to all doctors who are on the Basic Specialist Training scheme in psychiatry and have not yet successfully completed the Irish Clinical Membership Exam. €125.00

How to apply

BST Trainees can register to become a Pre-Exam Trainee member by completing the membership application form.

Affiliate Membership
This category is applicable to all Non Consultant psychiatrists (NCHDs) who are on the General or Supervised division of the Irish Medical Council Register, are not in an approved training post and have not completed the Irish Clinical Membership Exam. €135.00

Affiliate members should be registered on the Professional Competence Scheme with the College which is separate to membership. For information on the Professional Competence Scheme, click here.

Affiliate membership allows NCHD’s who work in psychiatry but are not in training to access the benefits of membership outlined below:

Associate / Overseas Member
Associate Membership is available to psychiatrists who are working and residing outside of Ireland who could benefit from the educational activities of the College, who are not registered with the Medical Council in Ireland. €170.00

If you are a newly qualified doctor registered on the internship register of the Irish Medical Council, you can become a member of the College free of charge for the duration of your internship year.  €00.00

Full Membership

Full membership of the College is available to all doctors who are eligible for one of the following four categories of membership. Those eligible for full membership must have passed the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland Basic Specialist Training Clinical Exam from July 2011 or MRCPsych (or equivalent) prior to July 2011.
Full Specialist Membership
Full Specialist membership applies to psychiatrists working in Ireland who have completed their training in psychiatry and are eligible for the Specialist Division of the Medical Register. All Educational Supervisors and tutors must be Full Specialist members of the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland, be on the Specialist Register and be PCS compliant. €505.00

The right to use the post-nominal Member of the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland, MCPsychI after your name, and to describe yourself as a member of the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland.

General membership applies to consultant psychiatrists working in Ireland who have completed the CPsychI Basic Specialist Training Clinical Exam or equivalent and are on the general register of the Irish Medical Council. €505.00

*Equivalent Membership exams – MRCPsych, ABPN or RANZCP.

Retired Membership
The Retired Membership category is available only to those psychiatrists who are fully retired, no longer clinically active and are no longer on the Medical Register in Ireland. €0.00

Retired members are entitled to the benefits of membership that apply to the category of membership applicable to them before they retired. Retired membership is free of charge and is available to current and previous members of the College.

The College of Psychiatrists of Ireland is recognised by the Medical Council, Health Service Executive and Department of Health as the body responsible for education, training and standards in psychiatry in Ireland. The College actively promotes the funding and delivery of the recommendations of A Vision for Change and acts to protect people with mental health problems from cuts to funding and staffing levels.
