This 2 day interactive workshop will cover the assessment and diagnosis of Eating (Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, Night Eating Syndrome) and Feeding Disorders (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, Pica Disorder, Rumination Disorder). Basic principles of cognitive behavioural therapy enhanced (CBT-E) will be introduced.  The workshop will use case examples, and role play to help attendees gain some understanding of core therapuetic procedures. Relevant assessment tools will be presented.

Enhanced Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are serious mental health problems that require effective treatment. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a structured and problem-focused approach that aims to help individuals understand and change their thoughts and behaviors related to food and eating. A new “enhanced” version of CBT (CBT – E) has been developed and proven to be transdiagnostic, effective for all eating disorders. It has recently been adapted for adolescents making it suitable for treating all EDs across the ages.

The formulation, techniques and interventions used are based on the CBT-E model. It starts with the awareness of the eating problem and the regulation of eating habits. Unlike classical CBT, there is no thought recording, but self-monitoring records are kept. Self-monitoring is an important feature of CBT for eating disorders as it provides a detailed measurement of eating problems and helps to direct the focus of each therapy session.

Treatment focuses on the processes that maintain the person’s eating problem, and subsequently, to address the main mechanisms that sustain the ED. Treatment is shaped according to sustaining factors, working on Body Perception, Diet Restriction and the Relationship between Events, Emotions and Eating.
