Advance Healthcare Directives in Mental Health: From Law to Practice
Evidence shows that advance care planning in mental health can reduce involuntary admissions by 25% as well as empowering service users and improving therapeutic relationships. Advance healthcare directives are now a legal entity in Ireland under the Advance Decision-Making (Capacity) Act, 2015, yet there remains an ‘evidence to practice gap’ and they are rarely used.
This event will include expert clinical, legal, ethical, and lived experience perspectives on advance care planning in mental health. The conference will include sessions on ‘Law and Ethics’, ‘Irish Experience’, and ‘Implementation and Practice’ and will culminate in a panel discussion on how best to implement AHDs in Irish mental health services. Psychiatrists, health and social care professionals, policy makers and people with lived experience are all invited to attend.
