A study group on the dynamics of the psychiatrist – patient encounter from a psychoanalytic perspective. The psychoanalytic field has been studying and publishing on this encounter for over a century and therefore is a very rich resource for psychiatric practitioners. The principle psychoanalytic concept underlying this study-group is transference. The focus will be on the challenge for clinicians to handle the transference to maintain the therapeutic arrangement.
The study group will consist of a weekly clinical discussion guided by reading of a key clinical texts from the psychoanalytic field.
Learning Objective: introduce psychiatrists to a psychoanalytic framework to use in formulating what may be happening in the practitioner – patient interaction.
Content: Guided reading through a key text which draws from the works of Sigmund Freud, of Jacques Lacan and of Michael Balint; participants’ clinical experience will provide a rich resource for their appreciation of the psychoanalytic understanding of the practitioner patient encounter.
